EXTRA-CREDIT CREATIVITY INVESTMENT: The Burn
Finally, there is a reason large parts of the business elite of the world’s most innovative entrepreneurial ecosystem—Silicon Valley—go to Burning Man each year, the famous weeklong community and arts festival in the Nevada desert. (Both of us have been yards away from Sergey Brin, cofounder of Google, doing a downward-facing-dog yoga pose, his face inches away from the dusty desert ground, at Burning Man.) We believe that everyone who is seriously interested in increasing their range of creativity should attend Burning Man at least once in their life. It is, in our opinion, the greatest concentration of creative energy ever put together in one place, and few people leave “The Burn” without having their sense of what is possible for them massively expanded.
Over the course of a few days, tens of thousands of people seem to create any crazy idea they can possibly dream up (from twenty-foot flaming iron orchid statues, to a functional replica of the Thunderdome from the Mad Max movies, to a giant glowing yellow duck on wheels made from an old transit bus). With such a high concentration of creative people loving their ideas into existence, the feeling of acceptance permeates the festival. Self-acceptance, acceptance of others, and acceptance of uncertainty. In short, it’s a high-concentration environment of “Yes!”
Could spending several thousand dollars to attend a party in the desert (including ticket, travel, and supplies) be a good investment? For a person who’s never been, who wants to enhance earning potential by bringing more creativity and more of themselves to their work, who might professionally benefit from meeting innovative entrepreneurs on the leading edge of popular culture, or who wants to increase their ability to hold sensation, it’s hard to imagine a better way to invest. In short, “Yes.”
